As temperatures drop to the low 40s tonight and even colder Sunday, it’s more urgent than ever that the unhoused find somewhere safe and warm to go not a boarded-up building or not a tent. At this time, we want to give a much-needed shout-out to Alisha Sonnier for stepping up and proposing Board Bill 94, which aims to push over $3.3 million from the Rams Settlement Funds to help expand and fund winter shelters across St. Louis.
The bill includes an emergency clause, giving the Department of Human Services the authority to move quickly contracting with local providers and getting resources in motion to help people this winter. It’s meant to be fast and flexible.
We’ve already broken down the bill in a previous article, but to keep it short Board Bill 94 is about survival. If passed, it gives the city the green light to act now before more people are forced to choose between freezing outside or risking their lives in abandoned buildings.
