H. Rap Brown, once one of the loudest voices of the Black Power movement, has died at 82 inside a federal prison hospital. He rose to national prominence leading SNCC and serving as Minister of Justice for the Black Panther Party. After converting to Islam, he became Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin, a community leader in Atlanta focused on serving and protecting his people.

Brown had been serving a life sentence for a 2000 shooting that left a Georgia sheriff’s deputy dead. Supporters have long questioned the fairness of his trial and the decades of government surveillance against him. But despite how his story ended, his legacy will not be remembered as a prisoner, but as a fearless fighter for freedom.
