Uber is making a major move toward a driverless future and it’s closer than many expected. In a game-changing partnership, Uber has teamed up with NVIDIA to deploy up to 100,000 autonomous robotaxis powered by NVIDIA’s cutting-edge AI vehicle platform.
According to multiple sources, the partnership aims to roll out a massive global robotaxi network over the coming years. While the full fleet won’t hit the streets overnight, the companies are already building the groundwork to scale production with testing, manufacturing, and deployment phases expected to kick into high gear by 2027.
Uber’s driverless cars will use NVIDIA’s DRIVE platform, which is designed to power Level 4 autonomous vehicles meaning they can operate without human intervention in most conditions. These robotaxis would be able to respond to Uber ride requests, navigate streets, and transport passengers without a driver behind the wheel.
This announcement comes at a time when labor shortages, rising wages, and technological acceleration are pushing the transportation industry toward automation. While some hail the move as the future of mobility, others worry about the long-term impact on jobs and regulation.
