Nearly two years ago, Northview Village Nursing Home in North St. Louis closed without warning, leaving more than 170 elderly patients displaced and nearly 200 employees unpaid and confused.
The closure happened in 2023, just 10 days before Christmas and it was chaos. Staff members were left scrambling to assist vulnerable residents as they were relocated out of the building on North Kingshighway and Highland Avenue. Since then, the once-bustling facility has sat vacant and abandoned.
In the aftermath, a former employee teamed up with the union representing the staff to take legal action against the nursing home’s out-of-town owners. And now, a long-awaited decision has finally come down.
U.S. District Judge Stephen Welby has ruled in favor of the workers, ordering the owners of Northview Village to pay $2 million in damages. It’s a major win for those who stayed behind to protect patients and uphold their duties during a dark and uncertain time.
But while the ruling is a step toward justice, the fight isn’t over. Now the workers must begin the next battle collecting the money they’re owed.
