On Saturday, January 17, 2026, just before 11:20 p.m., Belleville and Swansea police responded to reports of gunfire near the 1700 block of Jamestown Road. Officers arrived to find three female victims. One of the women, 18-year-old Shenandoah Burton of Swansea, Illinois, was discovered unresponsive in the roadway and was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other women were located in a nearby vehicle, one of whom had been shot.

Due to the jurisdictional overlap, Belleville Police took over the investigation. Authorities quickly identified a known acquaintance of the victims as the suspect and issued a regional BOLO.
Just hours later, around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, deputies in Perry County, Missouri spotted the suspect’s vehicle traveling southbound on Interstate 55. Before deputies could make contact, the suspect died from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
No additional suspects are being sought at this time. Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Shenandoah Burton.
