74-year-old Jewel Braziel is now being charged with murder after authorities say his girlfriend was found severely injured inside her apartment at a Jennings assisted living facility and later died.
According to the probable cause statement, Braziel called 911 around 5:13 a.m. on September 13 from the St. Andrews retirement complex in the 9600 block of Halls Ferry Road, reporting that his girlfriend was unresponsive. Authorities say Braziel refused to perform CPR while speaking with dispatch.
When officers arrived, they found the woman unconscious with visible injuries to her face. Police also reported finding bloodied rags in a trash can, which investigators believe suggested an attempt had been made to clean up the scene.
Neighbors reportedly told investigators they heard arguing coming from the woman’s apartment throughout the night, ending around 5 a.m. Surveillance footage also captured Braziel’s movements around the complex before and after the 911 call, according to the probable cause statement.
The woman was transported to Christian Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
What was supposed to be a safe living environment for seniors is now the center of a homicide investigation. 💔
