The defending state champs DeSmet Spartans were blanked in the final two quarters by SLUH’s defense, led by junior linebacker and this week player of the week Kendall McNutt with 10 tackles and an interception, including two goal line stands.
The Junior Billikens running game added two more touchdowns from Harris to seal the game on the road, 31-14. Harris finished the game with 95 yards on 15 carries and three touchdowns. His backfield mate, Taylor, ended the night with 162 yards rushing on 30 carries and a touchdown.
A tough loss for the Spartans, they hope to bounce back this week against another conference foe, CBC. The two goal line stands proved costly for DeSmet and allowed the Junior Billikens to pull away, according to Head Coach John Merrit.
“We got outplayed tonight, and a little outcoached tonight” Merrit said. “We have two trips to the red zone, and at home we’ve got to get those breaks.”
SLUH will face Lutheran High of St. Charles County this Friday at 7pm. Continuing to fight hard for four quarters and an unrelenting defense are the keys to keeping Coach Cruz’s team on the right path.
“That’s a great team, very well coached,” said Cruz. “We knew they’d have some punches when they made it 14-14. Resilient is the word that comes to mind for me and the defense in the second half really knuckled down.” @kendall.5k
