37-year-old John Bernard was fatally shot and killed after breaking into a man’s home to confront his former girlfriend. According to authorities, Bernard was standing over an unidentified man and ex-girlfriend while they were asleep in a home in the 4400 block of San Francisco. They woke up to Bernard standing over them and pointing a gun at the man around 12:45 a.m. The unidentified man who was in the bed grabbed his own firearms and fired several shots.
Bernard was shot multiple times in his upper extremities and was pronounced dead at the scene. According to detectives , two guns were recovered at the scene. Preliminary investigation concluded that the man sleeping in the bed acted in self-defense and that the incident is labeled as a justifiable homicide. No charges will be issued.
