HE DIDN’T LOSE THE BATTLE HE WON THE WAR HEAVEN GAINED AN ANGEL

Sean Nichols, former principal of Sumner High School and Fresh Start Academy, passed away last night after a courageous fight with stomach cancer. But let’s be clear cancer never dimmed his light. From the moment he stepped into a classroom, to the day he took his last breath, Sean was committed to something far greater than a job. He was building futures. And he did it with patience, power, and purpose.

To know Sean was to witness grace and grit in motion. He didn’t just work in education he embodied what it meant to lead. He stood tall in rooms where our children were often counted out, and he demanded that they be seen, heard, and poured into. Not tomorrow. Not “when the test scores improve.” But now.

He received countless awards in his lifetime, but the true measure of his impact can’t be found on plaques it’s in the eyes of the students he refused to give up on, in the teachers he mentored, and in the families who saw him as a safe place in a system that rarely offers sanctuary.

Rest easy, Mr. Nichols. You ran your race with dignity. And you ran it for us.
