EAST ST. LOUIS, IL — A woman is dead after an encounter with Illinois State Police on Sunday night that turned deadly.
Authorities say 40-year-old Rachel E. Tarrence of Mayville, Illinois, was shot and killed by state troopers following an attempted traffic stop in East St. Louis. Troopers say they were investigating a reported stolen vehicle and tried to stop the car near South State Street.
According to ISP, when troopers approached, the driver allegedly reversed and struck a squad car, then drove forward in the direction of a trooper. It was at that moment a trooper opened fire, fatally striking the driver.
