A shooting that left more than 70 shots fired in South St. Louis has now claimed the life of 20-year-old Abdule Campbell.
Police say the shooting happened just after 8:30 p.m. near Arsenal Street and Ivanhoe Avenue in the Lindenwood Park neighborhood. Video from the scene reportedly shows four men wearing ski masks and hoodies getting out of a vehicle, surrounding an apartment building, and opening fire. Investigators say three of the men then repeatedly fired into a car after the driver had parked.
Campbell was struck by gunfire and later died at a St. Louis hospital. A passenger who was inside the vehicle at the time was not injured.
Neighbors say they were shocked by the violence. One woman who lives in the area described Campbell as a respectful young man who would often help her unload things from her car when she needed it.
We have been paying close attention to the St. Louis rap scene, and let us be clear, this is not about all rappers. But there is a specific type of drill rap that continues to promote violence against one another, and we have even seen rival rap groups pull up to someone’s grandmother’s house and point a beam through her window. At some point the music and the streets start mixing in a dangerous way.
Man… this has to stop.
