There was a time when walking the Delmar Loop didn’t need a destination. You could just park your car, grab a funnel cake or some ice cream, and let the night carry you. There were singers on the corner, live bands spilling out of open doors, and crowds vibing without a cover charge. You didn’t need a nightclub because Delmar was the experience.

Back then, walking a mile down Delmar felt like you were on your own version of the Las Vegas Strip. Street performers had heart, restaurants had soul, and every block had a story. It was loud, beautiful, and alive the kind of place where you could be young, Black, and free, even just for a few hours.

That’s why the news of Blue Ocean’s closure hits different. After 17 years of serving sushi and good energy to the community, they’re getting ready to close their doors for good. And it’s not just another business shutting down. It’s another piece of St. Louis nostalgia slipping away.
Blue Ocean’s closure isn’t because they lost the love for what they do. According to St. Louis Magazine, the restaurant fell behind on rent and utilities during the pandemic. Years of trying to recover financially caught up, and a court-ordered eviction made it official. Despite efforts to stay afloat, the owners were forced to say goodbye.
